View Full Version : Solar Cover as Winter Cover?

We live in western PA where winters can get rough. I've had it with the black mesh and last winter's solid cover had its problems too.
Our pool is AG and surrounded by decking so covering it is a hassle but I'm tired of spring pea soup.
Has anyone ever tried to use their solar cover as a dirt barrier with a leaf net on top?

Yeah, my parents did. It was a disaster. You ruin the solar cover and end up with a mess in the pool anyway.
Worse, the bubbles pop off and make even MORE cleanup problems. Don't do it! Better to leave the pool uncovered or with the leaf net if you don't want to winter-cover it.

Thanks Carl for the input. Somehow I was afraid that would be the answer. I appreciate being saved a giant mess.
The solar cover looks like giant "pop-it" packing stuff where the bubbles are in the material. I had no idea the bubbles come off of the solar cover!
I'm beginning to think there's no easy cover way.

I use a safety-mesh cover. It lets water pass through, and, dust and pollen, but it works very well. Plus, it's designed to support the weight.
It's not that tough to put on.
You might be fine with just the leaf mesh, but if you don't have a pillow in the water the weight of ice and snow MAY damage it...but maybe not.
