I need a recommendation on a good test kit. This is my first year as a pool owner and I am just using test strips. help!

Taylor K-2006 (not the K-2005).
For salt level use the AquaChek salt test strips.  They are extremely accurate but slow. You have to let them develop for about 5 minutes.

Other than the fact that the K-2005 only measures up to 5ppm for FC, why is the K-2006 a better test kit?

It features a titration test for chlorine giving you 0.2 ppm precision.  The titration also eliminates any color-matching. And you test for free chlorine then combined chlorine, as opposed to free chlorine then total chlorine.  The test also measures up to 50 ppm chlorine.
