I have been having an ongoing problem losing water. Over the winter, the water fell way below the skimmer and the return, so I know the leak is not there. Is there a way to find a leak in the liner that is not noticeable to me (ie, not bubbles, etc. to signify water leaking/air getting in).

We had the same problem, two years in a row we lost almost half the water over the winter. Looked for the leak all last summer with no luck. There is lots of good info on here for finding leaks but none of it worked for me. This years i said screw it and decided to just replace to liner, first to fix the leak and second to see where it was. To my surprise the leak i have been searching for was not one, but many small, very small ones all around the cove, i would have never found them i had not gone under the liner after i emptied the pool. I was convinced my leak was within inches of the water line in in fact it was no where near it.

I think the tell tale sign of one many small leaks vs a few larger ones is the fact that my pool look like it was loosing water, then the next week it would seem to loose none or very little. I think this was caused by my many small leaks getting plugged up by debris and sand, then after a good day of swimming, the water would get mixed up and the holes would open. If i had had larger leaks, i bet my water loss would have been more steady.

Leak detection is incredibly difficult unless you can track it to one specific incident (something gouging the liner, etc) There are some products on the market and a good search of this site and the TFP site will probably give you some insite on what others have done. A lot of the time they end up just biting the bullet and getting a new liner.

Whatever depth you lost water to over the winter is approximately the height where you want to start looking - from that point to 2" down - concentrate around the area of your stairs because they see the most use and sometimes, drop in steps (if you have them) can do damage when you remove or install them without you knowing it.

holes tend to look like dark spots - or possibly like a sliver of finger nail stuck to the liner

What kind of cove do you have? Sand or Foam?

I have sand cove. I have looked and looked around for any signs of a leak, but still can not find it. I will search the sight for other suggestions and see if that helps.

Thanks

I spent two weeks last year looking on and off for a leak. I had ants chew a series of small pin holes in the cove. I purchased a good pair of gogles and filled an old pair of shorts with rocks to make it easier to stay on the bottom. I use plain Kool Aid powder the kind you add suger to and mixed it really strong into a little squeeze bottle. Persistance pays off when you see any thing that looks strange just squirt and if it gets sucked out.

Good Luck,

Sand.

I would have never found my leaks, there was too many small, very small holes around the cove. Like i said, i searched all last season for the leak.
