I have an 11,000 gal Kidney shaped inground pool. Last fall during a very heavy rain and flood, my pool was blessed with a petrolium product floating across the surface. The amount seems to be very small, the thickness is less that that of a sheet of paper. It has made it into my pump/filter system. What approach should I take to remove it? Absorbant Pads? Chemical to break down oil? Draining Pool? Any help would greatly appreciated.

Is your pool open now?

It's pretty unlikely -- if your pool got slimed over the winter -- that there's any oil left floating around. Almost certainly, it's been emulsified and biodegraded.

If you maintained your chemistry over the winter, it's not too likely to be there, either. Over time, oils tend to leave the pool. I'm honestly not sure how, but it happens every day since large quantities of oils, including some petroleum based, enter pools via lotions on swimmers.
