Cleaning metal ladders/pole

Does anyone have any tips on an effective way to clean the metal components of the ladder?

I use Bar Keepers Friend http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51RG0CG6AQL._AA280_.jpg It's like a scouring powder for things you don't want scratched.
