I have a Fox Pool, IG Vinyl and when I took the cover off I found a nasty tear in the corner. It's about 9" long. It's close to the top where the liner inserts into the frame of the pool. Can I patch this or is it too big?

Don't know if it's too big of a tear to patch but I would wonder where it's going to let go next and why it tore. However, you have nothing except a few bucks to lose by trying.

The corners seem to be the area of the most stress to the liner, it's not an exact corner, it's a cut corner at a 45 angle. It was also an area where the liner was out of the track slightly, but in the offseason, it found it's way back into the track at the expense of a tear.

I'm wondering if I lowered the water just a few inches too much this time. It was my 1st closing...

A pic would be nice in order to help determine the ability of fixing it.
Judging by your description you have one of the fox "on ground" pools.
Likely, it's not that you lowered your water too much that caused the tear, more so, I'd guess your ground retained lots of moisture over the winter (milder weather), once frost did hit, the ground expanded more than normal due to the higher moisture content, this pushed up on your steel wall and separated the liner, once frost leaves, the soil and wall returned to their normal position.
