water draining from filter

I turned off the pump and filter and I could hear the water draining from the filter. When I turned it back on, I had to bleed air from the filter. I re-seated the filter inside and made sure the top is on tightly and securely but it is still happening. Might I need a new ring seal? What else could be causing this? There isn't anything leaking that I can see. The pump is seeming to keep prime with this happening.
I have Jacuzzi cartridge filter. Today is the first day it's on this season.

For anyone else with a leak problem I have fixed it. I bought some pool/spa lube and applied a generous amount around all o-rings and that seems to have done the trick. I'd try that first for air leaks.
A word of caution-I went to a local hardware store and the guy there suggested Vaseline. He was quite surprised when I told him it would deteriorate the ring. I ended up going to Leslie's to be on the safe side.

Seems I was too optimistic about the fix-still loosing prime. Not all the time, just sometimes. That I don't understand. The pump went on this morning with no problem, there was no loss of prime. I didn't touch anything between noon when the pump went off ond 7pm when it went back on but the pump basket was empty of water. It does fill up right away but I can't program my pump if I can't trust that it is sealed properly.
I went out looking more closely and do see that there is a small crack in the pump itself, just behind where the ground wire is attached. I do not recall that being there before, then again, I never looked at it that closely before. Could that cause the leak?
Also I noticed that the putty-for lack of the proper word- around the pipe to the pump is still soft, but not even. Could this be a source of the problem? I noted too that there was water driping out of the end of the waste pipe. I never use that-I don't vacuum and use an electric pump to lower my water if I have to. The pool and pump are less than a year old. It is a Jacuzzi Magnum Force pump.
Also, there are no bubbles in the pump basket when the pump is running so I am thinking it isn't in a suction line. Correct thinking?
Any ideas... anyone?

Water dripping out the waste pipe when the pump is running indicates a bad gasket in the multi-port valve if that's what you have. If water is coming out, then air can get back in when the pump is off and let the system drain down. The crack in the pump housing could also be the source of an air leak. If it's on the suction side you can temporarily seal it with silicone seal. Probably an epoxy of some sort can be used for a permanent fix.

Al is dead-on about the multipotr gasket! But the crack on the motor side of the housing isn't a problem - that is the 'mounting plate' and water should never see it. It is just to bolt the motor to the housing, the sealing plate attaches to it and creates the seal that keeps water out of the motor (the sealing plate is held in place by the impeller) the only way water would get in there- or air could enter the basket, is if the seal assemby was bad and if that were the case, you'd see a puddle of water under the pump.

I interpreted the crack to be in the pump housing. Without a pic it is difficult to determine if this crack is a problem.

Thanks. My DH doesn't think that the crack in the pump is a problem-he says it is just the motor housing but I'll post a pic if I can figure out how.
We really REALLY lubed up the pump basket seal and filter o-ring and things seem to be holding for now. I am going to get new o-rings for both and see if that will work. Hasn't been any more water visible from the waste pipe so I'm hoping new rings are all it needs and I opened the waste valve and closed it to make sure it was tight. I did put Gorilla tape over the pump crack too-just incase.
I am also wondering if the filter bleed valve could be a source. Are those replacable?

I have leak in waste pipe and around the clamp on my Jandry filter. There is a threaded pipe which is the waste pipe that is joined to a coupling. When I tighten one both move. If I trun one to the left will they both come off so I can get to the o ring? My seal on the clamp is about two yeasr old .Looks OK but really have to tighten to stop leak. Im wondering if I should get a new one or just lube it? I have DE laying at the bottom of pool. Does anyone know if the leaking waste pipe could because of this?

Can anyone help me out with one of the return eyeballs It appears the threaare stipped where I screw it inot the pool becaue I tried screwing two different ones in and they get blown off.. Can I run filter without the eyballs?

16 x 32 plaster in ground.
