Salty Taste?

I'm thinking of converting to a Salt Water Generator and although the manufacturers claim it will not cause a salty taste to the water, I'm wondering what all of you think? Has anyone experienced salty tasting water with their generator?

I've heard that the concentration is about a teaspoon of salt to the gallon. Mix some up and see what you think of it.

I can taste a little salt, some people are more sensitive to it than others.

Here is a quote from a blog I found

"Ocean water has a salt content of around 35,000 parts per million (”ppm”). Humans have a salt taste threshold of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2,500 - 6,000 ppm in the pool."

The salty taste is a non-issue for us, but it is there though very bland. On the plus side, I now love to open my eyes under water, something I never did when we used "pool chlorine"....

I agree. Much better on the eyes and very little taste if at all.

Amen!! On mine ,as you dip your face in the pool, you will taste it on your lips for 2 seconds, then the taste is gone. Best thing is, once you get out, you felt like you took a clean shower. I never felt my skin feel so nice!! Better feeling then in my shower in all honesty.

You can open your eyes without discomfort because of 2 things:
1) The salinity of the pool water closely matches human tears so it's not irritating.
2) Your SWG is keeping a consistent level of chlorine in your pool to ensure that any irritating agents are rapidly metabolized.

Chlorine is chlorine. Your SWG makes chlorine by breaking down sodium chloride to release the chlorine. When it metabolizes something (algae, bacteria, suntan lotion, etc) it recombines back into sodium chloride. (I don't really understand this part of the chemistry--Chem_Geek will probably be happy to explain it if you need to know).

Of course, sodium chloride's common name is salt.

Most people's eyes are irritated by improper pool maintenance. Free Chlorine is not sufficiently maintained and contaminants appear, particularly Combined Chloramines.

CCs in your water mean there is some contaminant that your Free Chlorine is metabolizing.
CC gives pools that characteristic unpleasant "Oh there's too much chlorine" smell.
CC irritates your eyes and skin far more than Free Chlorine.

My pool and the pools of Watermom, Poconos and Aylad ALL have fairly high Free Chlorine levels (all easily exceed the absurd max recommended by the Government of 3ppm), yet rarely do ANY of us have that chlorine smell, nor is our water particularly irritating.

I inadvertently (don't ask!) put 160 lbs of sea-salt in my water and it is less irritating because it is closer to human tears than it was, but that's all.

So, you didn't switch from "chlorine" to "SWG". Both are chlorine pools, and, if necessary (and probably occasionally) you can add bleach to your pool.

And don't blame the chlorine for the irritated eyes!

Meanwhile, enjoy your sanitary, non-irritating pool!

Also a non-issue for me as the taste is not offensive to my tastebuds. You can taste it, it is faint but it is there. We run around the 3200-3500 level.

Before switching you should look over the threads on here and other forums that list the pro's and con's to installing a SWG. There have been a few negative posts popping up recently about them in regards to equipment/coping/decking damage. That said, for our pool which is still very young; it has not caused any problems. (Installed Summer '06)

My limited experience with it has been positive.

Actually the human eye is about 9,800 ppm, FWIW.

When we first had the swg installed I could detect a very slight salt taste - and I believe that was only because I was looking for it. I checked the salt level and found it was too high. Once I lowered it to the swg manufacture's recommendation I did not detect the salt tast.
