"Flashing" - the practice of applying a thin coat of gunite to the excavated hole to prevent a cave-in...

...in the past month or so, I have heard of it being done on two projects after rebar installation.

Is this kosher?

It would seem to me that it would not be OK. I can't imagine gunite adhering all that well to already-gunited steel.

Anyone?

As oposed to wet dirt??

They just did this to mine since we had a heavy rain the day before. It is a VERY thin layer, just enough to cover the surface. The rebar is still totally exposed. Besides, as I understand it, the gunite is not really adhering to the rebar so to speak. The rebar is encased in gunite to give it extra strength. Any of you builders use this practice?

If they are just spraying gunite though the cage to coat the dirt, only a light coating is getting on the rebar. Which will then be totally encased when the pool is gunited.

I doubt this would be in anyway negative to the completed pool.

Sounds like an ounce of prevention on the builders part to me.

I hate to imagine the hassle of clearing a collapsed dirt wall out of a pool with the rebar already positioned and wired.
