Question for all the Hayward pump experts:

Recently my 1.0 HP Superpump has been acting funny on hot restarts (i.e. the pump has been running, I shut off to backwash, then go for a restart).

The pump will turn on and spin for a second or two and then kick out. It doesn't hum, and it will move water for the short time it runs. If I let it cool down (15-20) minutes, it starts and runs fine.

Does this sound like a starter contact issue? I've seen references to the starter transistor in the archives, do they get hot and not work temporarily or just fail completely?

I belive Poconos had a great picture of the internals showing the contact switches so I'll pull the cover off tonight and inspect those. Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Doesn't sound like anything in the starter circuit since it gets going momentarily. Once it's up to speed that circuit is disconnected by the centrifugal switch. Sounds like a flaky thermal switch because you said it's a problem on hot restarts and it needs to cool down to work. On that pic the thermal switch is mounted at top center on the back plate. Just above the gray centrifugal switch spring. If you have a voltmeter you can measure across the contacts when it has quit. If you see anything other than about zero volts it's open. Cheap and easy to replace.
