where does one get the sand for thier filter?

nearest white sand beach or golf course:) seriously, pool stores will sell it, probably landscape suppliers (as long as it's the right type) consider zeobrite which is half the weight for the same volume and much better filtering capability. it cost me about 80 bucks for 2 -50 lb bags (equivalent to 200 lb of sand for example) which is 'dirt cheap" (pun intended) when you think it will last you for years and years with proper cleaning maintenance.

Not dumb at all. It has to be a special pool filter sand. Pool store or maybe Lowe's.

I agree, strongly consider using Zeobrite.
filters better,you use less of it, lasts years longer, & you can grow plants in it when you're done using it as filtering material.

Contact any pool store & compare sand to Zeobrite ( or other zeo product)

ps- i've had to do some pretty severe vacuuming jobs lately and unlike sand, i have yet to need to do any backwashing...so i didn't before, but now i do, buy the reduced backwashing capability.
