Oh NOOOO! I added scented bleach

In a hurry I added one gallon of scented bleach. Is this the end of mankind as we know it, or will my pool be Okay?

Good question...
I suspect that one gallon wouldn't be a problem... ( I think the scent will disapate fairly quickly), but I don't know what agents they use to bind the scent... that may be a different story.

Chemgeek & waterbear probably know the answer to that...

( wonder if you could actually "scent" a large pool using scented bleach & how long the scent would remain for....? You can buy scent for hot tubs, but it doesn't last long.... I was guessing that it cost about $30K to scent my pool with "hawaiian lily" hot tub scent...lol)

I don't know what the scent is, but generally that sort of chemical is organic and is also usually volatile which means it should eventually dissipate out of the water (i.e. go from liquid to gas) and it will probably get oxidized by chlorine. I doubt that you will even notice the scent with only one gallon in the entire volume of your pool water, but if you really wanted to ensure you got rid of it, you could shock your pool which would likely accelerate the oxidation. However, I think that's overkill and that the scent will either degrade or dissipate over time.

Considering all of the other junk that gets into your pool, including bugs, leaves, sweat, hair, dead skin, spit, urine, and (hopefully not) fecal matter, I would think that a little scent might be a nice change.:p

Seriously, the only problem I could imagine from a foreign chemical such as scent is that some chemicals might interfere with chlorine's disinfection capability, but as far as I know, only CYA does that:rolleyes: . Well, I suppose dumping Sodium Thiosulfate (the chemical that elminates chlorine in your TA test) into your pool wouldn't be great idea.:eek:

wish I had a bottle of that stuff so we could guess what the binding/bonding agent was....
I know a little about purfume manufacturing ( from a tour through a factory in europe ) & the whole binding agent part of it is quite facinating

I do know that on the Clorox website they state that their scented bleach is NOT an EPA approved sanitizer!
