New 12 x 25 fiberglass kidney. Can't decide on lighting. 300 watt white light would be pretty and probably provide plenty of light but pool guy wants to install 2 LED's at $400+ each. Are LED's going to be as bright as a 300 watt light? I just want the pool to "glow" at night for effect more than light. Could 1 LED be enough?

Led's are bright, but do not "throw' the light very far, so essentially you get good light up close, but a good glow all over (within a certain space), I believe he wants to install 2 on opposing ends so the whole pool is covered evenly and looks good. Personally, I would go with the LED lights, you will NEVER EVER have a problem with them unless it's wiring related, where the 300 W light will burn out frequently, waste a ton of hydro and be overly bright.

I have a 16x34 vinyl pool with a darker liner, just had the hayward colorlogic led's put in, one in the deep end and one in the shallow. All I can say, once it turns dark!! awesome!!! it has 5 lights, blue and purple pink are the best, I dunno who would swim in red and green. and 7 I think preset programs that blink and fade and flash, very very cool!!

I just tried to look that one up, according to the net, rainbow rays is just a replacement bulb that has some logic built in but is extremely overpriced at over 300 bucks (if that's the one).
But, looking for this item led me to an LED place that sells MR16 replacement lights and instead of halogen they have LED technology in them, since halogens run on 12V DC and these LED lights do as well, I don't see a problem installing one of these in a waterproof housing - according to the site:
"They are highly suited to waterproof situations as the LED's sit inside the rim of the bulb."
So, when my Aqualuminator bulb bites the dust, I will be retrofitting the light head with a whopping 16 dollar MR16 automatic color changing LED.
