We have an inground pool with a vinyl liner. It is leaking a lot but not sure from where. We just replaced the pump because the last one was cracked. (I don't think the landlords closed it properly last winter.) We are getting a lot of air in the pump when we use the bottom drain. Is it possible one of the pipes underground are cracked and causing the air and the water leak? How would we know for sure? If the landlord hires someone to fix it how should it be done and about about how much should it cost? (All this is assuming it is the pipes to the bottom drain.)

Thanks,
Amanda

Since you just replaced the pump, I'd look at the new connections, especially on the suction side, first. You can put a very wet rag completely over a joint to see if that stops the air coming into the pump strainer.

If you can't find the leak that way, Waste and other smart guys will be able to advise you further.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that we we're having the leaking and air in the pump problems before we replaced it. We replaced it because it had a huge crack inside. It has just recently gotten much worse within the past few days.

Also, there is no water leaking around the pump or filter. They are located in the garage and the floors have been dry.

If it's a main drain pipe that is cracked most likely a dye test will prove it. Dye is the way a lot of leaks are found. You didn't say anything about the leak rate but air in the lines does indicate a suction side leak. Dye can find pretty small leaks if done carefully and correctly and especially if you have an idea where the leak is located. As for the cost, I have no idea.
