Okay you guys and gals. I have been posting about my high CYA (100) levels and have decided to drain and refill to correct.
But I am not sure about how much salt to add back to the pool. I have notes from the pool builder that a 40 pound bag will raise it 500 points. But then I found a chart that came with the Aquarite and it said that a 12,000 gallon pool will only need 13 pounds of salt to bring it up to 3200 ppm. So that doesn't make any sense to me. I know that the guy who set up the pool added several bags of salt. My pool is about 12,000 gallons (inground, plaster).
Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for the amount of salt?
Right now I am using the Aquarite diagnostic utility to know the salt level. Maybe there is a better test for that? It is all I have now.
THANKS!

I'm a newbie who's still waiting for her AquaRite SWG to be installed but have been reading all I can and posting ?s as they arise.
To determine how much salt to add back into the pool, first do a salt test to determine what residual level you have left after your partial drain. Ben's kit has a great salt test (I've already experimented) or perhaps a good, trusted pool store can test the water for you???
Then go to that great Bleach Calculator and click on "More Calcs" where you'll see a salt calculation listed. Within that salt calculation, you can put in your pool's volume of 12,000 and indicate how much of an INCREASE you want to make in your salt reading. The calculator will tell you how many pounds of salt you need to do that.
I did a calculation there with your pool's volume and the calculator determined that 40 pounds of salt will raise your pool's salt concentration 399.9ppm.
I also looked at my owner's manual for the AquaRite and could not find anything resembling "13 pounds of salt to bring it up to 3200ppm" for a 12,000 gallon pool. The only "13" I found on my entire chart was the amount of salt needed to increase an 8000 gallon pool from a current salt level of 3000ppm to 3200ppm, a 200ppm increase for that size pool. Maybe you have an incorrect chart? You can always go to goldlinecontrols.com to download an owner's manual for your unit, or just the charts, if that's all you need.
Perhaps someone else will have another way for you to determine your remaining salt level if you don't have a way of testing for it.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree completely with Sandy. First thing you need to do is test your water and figure out how much salt you have in there now. From that you should be able to figure out how much salt you need to put in to get your level up to the desired 3200 ppm.
The table below is Goldline's:

If you go to mwsmith2's posts, there is a Bleach Calculator that will help you find oiut how much salt you need. If you can get a salt test kit (K-1766) from your local pool store or Taylor Technologies, it will give you an accurate value for your salt level.
BleachCalc 2.6.2 here:http://home.earthlink.net/~mwsmith70/data/BleachCalc262.exe
Hope this helps.
