I run my pump/filter 24/7 and I've noticed lately that the pump is very hot to touch. Should it be heating up like this or does this indicate an impending problem? A month or so ago the motor overheated and it shut off until it cooled down but has worked fine since then. I've also kept a tarp over it since then to minimize the heat of the sun on it. Should I be looking into the best place to buy a new motor and/or pump?
Thanks.

can you somehow build a little shelter that keeps direct sun off it, but allows airflow...i would be more worried about airflow even if the sun hits it then no airflow but sun shelter myself..just like electronics, it needs cooling..can you relocate to a shadier place.
ps- my pump is 8-10 yrs old and the motor always has been hot to touch with no failures (it's in a pool shed with ventilation, but even so, the shed gets very hot in the midday sun..90+)

Actually, it does have ventilation with sun shelter with the tarp I have over it. The tarp is over the filter so several feet above the pump. I can't really relocate it. So, if your has been hot and running fine for years, maybe I don't need to be concerned. I just don't want it to die on me and then I have to pay full-retail price because I'm in a pinch when I might be able to get one online for a better price if not in an emergency.

To my knowledge, they all run hot....frequently too hot to touch for very long.

Thanks Dave. It helps to know that.
