Now that I know what to add to my water to get my numbers right, will someone tell me if it's ok to add it all at the same time? My numbers are
CL 0.6 I was told to add 1 gallon on 6% bleach. ALK 50 I was told to add 2lbs of baking soda. Do i just sprinkle it in the pool or add it somewhere else? Can I Do both on the same night as well? Please help, I want to do this before it gets dark. Also do I need to add any borax? Thanks in advance for y'alls help!!

Add your chlorine first (bleach). That's your most important thing.

You CAN add the baking soda for the total alk at the same time but it's always better to wait, say till morning to do that. The baking soda can be poured in the skimmer.

You only add Borax if your pH is low. What is your pH?

Carl is right that is it usually best to wait a bit to add more than one thing. With that said, I have to confess, I add bleach and Borax and baking soda all at the same time  and have never had a bit of trouble.

Ok, Carl - go ahead, scold me! :p :p

Bad, Bad Watermom! Such an example you are setting for the "children!"

'Mom knows that some chems don't usually interact and can be OK to add at the same time, but others don't play so nicely together. It's generally a bad habit to add different things at the same time.

Thanks guys!!! One more question and I think that I'm starting to understand all this stuff.

How do I maintain my chlorine level? My pool holds 5,000 gallons. I know that I need to keep testing but how high will 1 cup of bleach raise my level and so on?

search on the forum for "bleachcalc", download it and put it on your desktop. You'll use it all summer.

1 gallon of regular (5.25%) bleach adds 5.25ppm to 10,000 gallons

1 gallon of Ultra (6%) bleach adds 6ppm to 10,000 gallons.

Each gallon will add double that to your pool. A cup is 1/16 of a gallon.

So one cup will add 1/16 of 10.5ppm using regular bleach and 1/16 of 12ppm using Ultra.
