We have a test strip kit... I know I need a drop based, which we'll buy at walmart because we don't have a leslie's or bob's (or whatever these stores you're all talking about near us). The drop based test kit... how many tests should i get. Our test strip now tests alkaline, ph, and bromamine. So what do we need to get to test everything we need to? What is CYA and what is CL

CYA is cyanuric acid, also called stabilizer or conditioner.
CL is chlorine

You can buy the 5-way drops based kit at Walmart for about $13. Post results when you get your new kit and also tell us what type and size your pool is.

What are the five things that the kit tests?

In case you are referring to the HTH 5 way kit, it measures total chlorine, ph, alkalinity and stabilizer. The fifth is hardness, in case you need that.

See CarlD's post for a link to a more detailed explanation of those types of tests and what to do about the results. The HTH kit at Wal-Mart is an OTO test kit.
