Mud in pool

We just had about a foot of rain, which caused a flash flood. My pool filled up with mud water and is completely brown. Now the very fine layer of brown silt has rested at the bottom of the pool. The silt is so fine that the filter does catch it. I have a 18,000 gal, IG, not sure the type of filter. Any ideas to get it out?

You need to find out what type of filter you have and post for the pros here to answer you better than I.You may want to get a skimmer sock or let it settle out and vacume to waste.

The filter should say something like D.E, Sand filter or cart on it.

Anyhow, just because it's setting there at the bottom doesn't mean the filter want catch it. The pool just needs a good vacumming. I would keep an eye on the pressure to make sure it's not to high and nor does it get to high while vacuuming that much junk. In some cases, I'll vacuum that stuff to waste, meaning it never goes to the filter but to the drain. Keep in mind this will drain some water from the pool....all of it if you leave if on waste for a while ;) You may want to Back wash the filter if it's a sand before hand or clean it if it's a cart filer after wards. Also they make some Water clearafier thats works pretty good. It attaches to the fine particals in the pool causing them to fall to the bottom and be vacuumed up. .

I woke up this morning to a green pool for the same reason - lots of brown dirt flowing in overnight. I shocked it to the highest levels, put a cut off leg of panytyhose which is like a skimmer sock on, and have my pool cleaner in. The water is already almost blue, and the skimmer sock is dirty, I have already rinsed it off 2 x. I also brushed down the pool to get any dirt of the sides and steps. I also added some metal sequestering agent in case there is anything in the dirt.

Thanks for the input. I will check to see what type of filter I have. Can you tell me where you intsall skimmer sock?

I cleaned the 4 cartridges, which took over an hour to pressure wash them and they still had dirt coming out. The pool is looking better.

I put the panty hose over the skimmer basket and it is definately getting the smaller particles of dirt. Is there any where else that I can put a sock to catch the silt before it goes to the main filter?

Just to clarify.....Does the skimmer sock goes inside the skimmer basket like a coffee filter or on the outside of the basket or does it matter? I have a bar across my basket and the sock doesn't fit as well as it does on the outside and no instructions came with them.

The skimmer sock goes inside the basket, the bar should come off, and then you can put it back on.

If you haven't done it yet, you may want to vaccum the pool again. All the loose floating Alge will die and fall to the bottom of the pool. I usualy will vaccum this to waste if it's real bad.

Pool is crystal clear today - I did vacuum to waste this morning. Now for the basement carpet!!!

What a blonde moment...I glued the bar when it broke last year with denture repair acrylic and forgot that at one time it was removeable...(I don't wear dentures and being a dental professional don't recommend them.).. just have access to the stuff ... It works great for plastic repairs and is very strong :D
