I saw some shock at Wal-Mart that said it did not have have stabilizer in it. Is this something new or has it been around a while?

It's probably cal-hypo, which is the main ingredient in many prepackaged shocks, and is not stabilized. It's been around a long time..

Be aware that the cal hyop shock at walmart is NOT full strength. It is 45-48%. Normal strength is 68%. You will have to add more of it to reach the same ppm of chlorine in your pool! I believe 1 lb will raise 8000 gal to 10 ppm chlorine while full strength cal hypp will raise 10000 gal the same amount.
