Hi Geri here. Any advice would be appreciated. I have a 15 foot round, 4 foot deep above ground pool. I am wondering how much household bleech to use to chlorinate it. It is already clean I just want to save money. How much should I put in, and how often, to maintain the clear water. Thank you! Geri

Hi Geri,

Welcome to the forum. You need to download MWSMITH's bleach calculator. It will figure how many gallons of water you have and then you can figure how much bleach you need. It will depend on the amount of CYA in your water. Let us know if you have any further questions, and enjoy your pool!

thank you! Download Bleach Calc and it won't work as I don't know what desired PPM means. Thanks Geri

Hi there! I got it to work! Thanks for the link! Now all I have to do is figure out how often to add the 2 gallons it suggested. I am getting there! Thanks for you help! Geri

You need to get a drop-based test kit, test your water daily, and take a look at the best-guess table (First post in this forum) that is based on your CYA level, and that will tell you when to add it.

I'm new at this too...but I believe I'm getting a system down (that works for me). As suggested...get a nice drop based kit. Then get a full set of readings (including CYA) and post them here.

Let the water and water test be your indicator for your chemicals. Stabilize first...then only add what's needed or what needs to be changed.

Your pool has about 5301 gallons of water. 2 gallons of bleach (assuming 6%) would get you over 22 ppm.

Are you sure you need this much? What's your CYA reading?

Hi Rangeball. I have to test the water, but we have a thunderstorm right now LOl Will let you know CYI reading later this week and thank you! Geri

Geri,

Be careful before adding 2 jugs of bleach. If it will raise you to 22 PPM then it may bleach your liner. The amount of bleach depends on the amount of CYA you have. Folks here usually shoot for 30-50 PPM on CYA, and a bleach reading of 3-5 PPM, with a shock level of 12-15 PPM of FC. Do yourself a favor and order Ben's test kit from this site. It is head and shoulders above the rest. This stuff is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it, and there are plenty of people more than willing to help you out.
