I have maintained my pool for over 15 year's and never had this problem. In Ohio do to the weather our season didn't start till a week ago. My winter cover is the type that is anchored to the cement walkway. The mesh does allow for fine sediment to filter into the pool. It takes some vacuuming and brushing to clean it up.
So far I have added 7 gallons of 12% chlorine and I'm still having a problem maintaining the chlorine level . The PH is at 7 to 7.2 and the CYA is really low. I do have a chlorinator that I use tablets as a back up. In all the years I have never had to add more than 3 gallons to start.

In answer to my own question ,I'm guessing the lack of stabilizer is my problem. I found some stabilizer at menards today (Trihydroxy-s-triazine ) . Is it the same as Cyanuric acid? Will this be ok to use?

Again replying to my own thread. Hope this information can help others.
The CYA in my pool caused the problem. For some reason over the winter the stabilizer went to zero . That had never happened before in all the years I have had the pool. I can't remember having to add stabilizer.
My primary sanitizer has been liquid chlorine . I use a chlorine feeder with 1" tablets ( trichlor) as a supplement . The stabilizer in the tablets kept the CYA in the water around 50 ppm . When I added the gallons of liquid chlorine at startup ,it did not last long without the stabilizer . As soon as I added cyanuric acid to raise the ppm to 30 ,the chlorine level held. I'm sure there are a lot of pool owners that know all this, I didn't. I hope this can help someone else, thanks for reading.
