Just bought home has a 25 ft round above ground pool with Hayward ec40 filter. Can’t wait to ask some questions!

OK, your pool has about 13,500 gallons, with a PF of 8.8.
here are a couple of basic recommendations, to help you avoid an immediate green swamp:
1. Verify that the pool has neither PHMB (Baquacil, Softswim, etc) or copper (from algaecides or an 'ionizer' or 'mineral' unit.
2. If it has neither, visit Walmart and get 10 gallons of 10% pool bleach (Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid (https://www.walmart.com/ip/48938023)). If they have it, ALSO get an HTH 6-way test kit (liquid reagents).
3. Test your pool's pH, chlorine, and stabilizer. Report the results back here.
4. Pour in a FULL gallon of bleach. Then, if the water is clear, began adding 1/2 gallon each EVENING, until you've worked out some other plan.
5. Meanwhile, you'll need a K-2006 test kit from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004BGF7TI/poolbooks/). If you are very lucky, it will reveal that your local pool store tests accurately. More likely, it will show that you can't trust them.
6. But even if they ARE accurate, do NOT buy anything other than pure chlorine (trichlor, dichlor, bleach, cal hypo) and pH adjusting materials (up or down). Avoid 3-in-1, 4-in-1, X-in-1 chemicals like the plague they are. Avoid algaecides, stain control agents, and the like. If you THINK you need one of those, do NOT get it and use it YET.
7. Instead, post the reason you THINK you need it here. I may know a better way to get it, or more likely, be able to explain why you actually do not need it!
8. Again, once you have actual test numbers, post them here (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium and stabilizer -- ignore readings for TDS. If you get phosphate results, you can report those, too.)
9. Do NOT add calcium increase to a vinyl pool EVER. Do NOT ask about, or use, a salt system: salt destroys metal wall / metal tube above ground pools!
