Getting ready to change my sand(silca) filter media. Any opinions on the different types of available materials I.E. Glass, Poly Balls etc . . . ?

I am kind of leaning toward the "Poly Balls" From what I have read most options are better than the sand.

To the contrary, I've never seen any credible information supporting the idea that ANY non-sand media is superior to properly graded filter sand. (There ARE problems, when people try to use non-silica sand or sand that hasn't been properly graded or "screened" for filter use.)

Zeolites* can temporarily be better, but the very nature of ion-exchange zeolites (also legitimately used in various water softener and water treatment devices) is that to RETAIN their effectiveness they have to be REGULARLY chemically regenerated. I've never seen a zeolite filter media that was supplied with a regeneration plan.

Of course, I have not seen everything. If you have real data -- not mfg sales or promotion slicks -- supporting such claims, I'd be grateful if you can post links, so I can take a look.
