I purchased a solar cover and reel for an AGP (oval 12 x 18). From what I've read it's recommended that the reel should be installed at the beginning of the radius. Now, without having looked at the instructions that came with either the cover or reel this makes me wonder: Wouldn't that make the area behind the reel UNCOVERED?

I presume you're talking about an oval pool, so basicallt you set the reel across the pool just before one end staret to taper to round.
You put webbing (straps) that drop straight down on the solar blanket and connect them directly below, when you roll it up, it will fold the blanket at the point where the webbing connects and roll it up doubled up for teh short end and then wrap all that with the remainder from the long end.
When you unroll, pull back towards the long end, tehn scoot around the edge to straighten the short end and get it placed right.
It is a good idea to make the reel removable or swingable so you can move it off the pool when using the pool.
