Hi all! My elderly neighbors are trying to sell their home because they can no longer afford to keep it. They have a 35,000 gallon plaster pool that we have affectionately named "The Barbie dream pool" because of her kidney shape, diving board, slide and baby wading pool. Anyway, our family has been taking over the care and upkeep of the pool to help out the neighbors because they cannot physically or financially afford to.

The pool was covered in black algae when we first started working on it and now with twice a day brushings we have gotten about 98% of the algae out. We shocked the pool two days ago and as of yesterday my readings were at;

FC 16 ppm
TC 16 ppm
CC 0 ppm
pH 6.9
Hardness 259 ppm
Alkalinity 63 ppm
CYA 10 ppm
Total Disolved solids 700

We have spent a couple hundred dollars trying to kill all the algae and know basically nothing about pool chemistry and are learning as we go. Thank goodness I have found your site before the pool supply store sells me anything else, especially since this isn't even our pool. As the old saying goes, " No good deed goes unpunished"

My question is this; how can I get the alkalinity up and the pH up? The pool is at least 40 years old and there are bits and pieces of plaster that continue to flake off. Could it be because the alkalinity and pH are off? Once I get that correct, would that help lessen the amount of plaster degradation?
