I am trying to get rid of all my algae right now, but I read somewhere that you need to clean your filter after you get rid of algae.Does pouring all that bleach though it not clean it?Is there something else that need to be done to clean the filter? Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum. Chlorine will kill and sanitize things but won't clean a filter of the dead stuff and junk that it traps. Post what type of filter you have and then someone can tell you how to clean it. Three types of filters, cartridge, DE, and sand and they're all different.

What you need to do then is backwash it, until the water coming out is clear. This will get any algae that is sitting on top of the sand in the filter to get flushed out of it. Good luck on the opening, it can be a pain sometimes. And welcome to the forum, this place is a gold mine.

i have a question along the same lines...how often should i backwash? also at what pump pressure is a good indication that you need to backwash? i have a hayword sand filter (100 lbs) with a 1 hp pump. my pressure right now is about 15 to 17 psi.

When clean, my 1.5 HP pump and sand filter runs at 5 to 7 PSI. I backwash when the PSI hits 12 PSI.
