Hayward sand filter problem

I have a 150lb filter. It is not filtering properly. I swept the pool and all agae that I swept up didn't filter out. It put right back in pool. Also when I back wash the filter dirty water goes out the waste hose and also into the pool thru the jet. What may cause these problems?
