I have an 18 foot round above ground pool that I use trichlor chlorine pucks in with a sand filter. Prior years opening was not nearly the problem that this year is. I can’t get any FC to show up!
On May 21 I opened to weak tea-colored water with some leaves in it. I skimmed out all the leaves and ran the filter constantly and added opening dose of HTH algaecide and 1 pound of chlorine shock then another pound a few hours later. Added two 3” pucks to floater. No free chlorine showed on my test strips but pH and alk looked okay. CYA looked like 100 on my test strip.
On May 22 I added another pound of shock but still no FC registered. Water clearing up. May 23 added another pound of shock, 4 total now.
May 25, water was clear, but no FC, added 1.5 gallons of 8% bleach, still no FC.
May 26 took water sample to pool store and explained problem – can’t get any FC to register. Pool store tests showed FC 0.79, TC 11.38, pH 7.7, alk 138, hardness 429, CYA 3 (wow), 0 copper, 0.1 iron, phosphate 150, and “some” ammonia. Their expert recommended 4 pound of non-chlorine shock, which I added, keep the pucks in the floater, OK to swim he said, that should “break up” my TC into FC and I’d be good to go.
May 27 morning no FC!
May 27 after dark I added 6 gallons if 5.25% bleach.
May 28 early morning no FC!!!!!
What is going on? Do I keep pounding with more bleach?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
