Glad I found this forum. This is our second year with a pool that came with the house we bought. Previous owners had the pool closed up for over 5 years. Last year was great and didn't have to do much on maintenance once we got it open. Towards the end of the season we got mustard algae. I put in Clean Sweep and got rid of it. Was vacuum the stuff out when my pump motor died. So couldn't get another pump until now. Trying to opening up the pool again and its been unsuccessful. The water is a milky aqua color and won't go clear. Using a Hayward sand filter with a 1hp pump motor, have auto chlorinate with 3" tabs. Pool is 16x32 est about 20,000 gal of water. I am using test strips right now and fixing to pony up and buy a liquid test kit after reading this forum. Total chlorine is 3, free chlorine is 0, Total hardness is 250, ph is 6.8, total alkalinity 120, and stabilizer is >50. I just poured in last night 3 gals of walmart concentrated bleach (8%). Ran pump in filter all night. Didn't even touch the chlorine level. Also added 4lbs of 20 mule borax. I have also tried to shock the pool before with 4 bags of shock and also try a algae sink and sweep. Didn't touch it. I've always used a local pool store to test my water. I felt like the last time I went they just threw stuff at me hoping it would solve my problem. Almost the same stuff every time I go. I am trying to send my daughter thru med school so don't have a whole lot of extra cash to spend on this pool any more. PLEASE HELP!! I am ready to swim.
