hayward salt generator

I got the unit on ebay, couldn't pass up the deal. They said it was new never used. upon receiving it everything looked like it was never even opened. The t cell box still had its tape on it. Hooked everything up, started to add salt. plugged in the unit and in off position would read 2800. Took a sample of water to pool store and they said it was 1900. Added more salt and as of today have 3000 on salt. Was on phone with Hayward and he had me reset the salt, now it just read 0 and prior to resetting the cell amp. used to have numbers now it has nothing. Took the cell to the pool store and it works. Am I missing something, no LEDs are lit except for power?
