Intex Sand Filter Pump & Saltwater System CG-28679 for small pool

So I have a small round 12 foot diameter 30 inch tall pool. I am in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For now this is fine for our kids, but we will get something larger in the future, like a 12' by 24' above ground pool (that is taller as well). I am wondering about getting the Intex CG-28679 now, so I could use it on a larger pool later. The specs on the unit say "Designed for use with above ground pools from 4,800 to 15,000 gallon capacity." My pool right now is only about 2,000 gallons. If I run the filter less can I still use it on my pool now?
