I have a Pentair Whisperflow 30 pool pump and it has started to make a noise for a while every morning when it starts operation. Its kind of like something is wearing or a bearing or something needs lubrication. What could be causing this to happen and is there anything I can do to stop it or prevent damage to the pump. The pump is about 7 years old.

Probably a bearing. They can be replaced if you have the right tools and skills. ;-)

Otherwise, you will need to replace the motor and get a new seal kit.

But why such a big pump? Do you have a spa?

Thanks for the info. I have a pool and a connected spa with a pump for each. It is the pool pump that is making the noise. Guess I will have to check out where I can buy a replacement motor. Do you know if seven years is the normal life of such a unit?

Motors can last quite a while and 7 years is not uncommon. The biggest failure of bearings is due to a failed shaft seal which allows water to leak onto the bearing so it is important to fix the shaft seal at the first sign of a leak.
