for 2 years since getting our first pool" 16x32" I always drained water level to 6 inches below return.
My return is a light/return combo.
I always removed the return/light but always left it open, not plugged.
Do I need to actually plug this off and why if so?We do get some brutal winters here in Iowa
Thanks

Water from snow/rain can fill the pool above the return line and then ice can form inside the line breaking it. So you are better off plugging them.

thanks for the reply, but I am still a little confused and maybe should have explained a little more.
After I drain pool 6 inches below the return,I remove the diverter cover and light, and then disconnect the flex pipe that connects to the back of that, leaving only the short housing that the bulb and wires pass through.
Same as my skimmer.
Disconnect flex tube on the back of that, and then vacuum both lines out that run to the disconnected pump, heater equipment. Then cover pool and remove the rest of of the equipment ,heater, pump etc.
Maybe I am missing something being fairly new to this, or are the plugs for return and covers for the skimmer intended for those that do not disconnect lines directly on those 2 items and leave pipes attached on that end?

Sorry, I did not know this was an AG pool (helps to have a signature). But I would still plug the holes. Otherwise, when the water level reaches the holes, it will run out and could compromise the bottom of the pool.

Thanks for the info.
Will get a plug for the return.
Another question, our water has a very high TA level and it took quite some time and work to get the level from 360ppm to 120.
Could I get by with using a skimmer cover along with the return plug and not drain the pool to below the return fitting as I have done in the past?
Sure would make winter cover fit better since it wouldn't need to drop so far into water level and actually have a little slack along the wall uprights and save time re adjusting the TA next spring.
The winters here are returning to the 1960's era.
thanks
