Repairing busted grout

My pool is 17 years old.
There is a flagstone border around the perimeter of the pool. Where the flagstone meets the deck the grout is all busted from the pool shifting and settling over the years.
I'm going to take a couple of weekends and try to repair it.
I've never done this kind of work before.
I'm planning on taking a chisel and hammer and knocking out the old grout.
Then putting in new stuff with a trowel.
Has anyone ever done this and is there anything I'm missing?

I'd look at an self leveling elastomeric sealant rather than grout. Sika is a good brand of elastomeric and is sold in caulk tubes. It comes in tan, grey and red. You need to put a foam rubber "backer rod" in the joint before you seal it so it doesn't take fourtyleven tubes of sealant. The elastomeric will move with the shifting and settling. I don't know of any reason this shouldn't be done around a pool, but if someone can give you a good reason, listen and decide for your self.

Home Depot had the Sika product for $12.99 for a 26 oz tube. I'll check WalMart, too.
I think what was originally used was a similar product. It looks like mortar but it's rubbery instead of hard and brittle.
I'll go with your suggestion.

If you did use a grout product, apply it with a piping bag. Its a cone shape with a small opening at the tip of the cone. Fill it with grout and squeeze. Bakers use the same kind of thing for cake decorating. They can be gotten at Lowes.
