Stumbled upon this site looking for solutions to our problem of our pool not being able to hold chlorine for the last couple of years. Has been a very frustrating, expensive 2 seasons. After reading some of the posts on this site, I think I am starting to find a solution. I have a 27' round, heated (to about 83 deg., above ground pool w/a sand filter. It holds 17,500 gls. After ruling out phosphates, I decided to try the one thing we haven't, dumping massive amts of chlorine into our pool. Also learned that this should be done at night & not in the day, which I didn't know. Anyway, after dumping 10 gls on store bleach in pool, we held chlorine for one whole day. Dumped 10 more gls in pool which held for 2 days. dumped 10 more gls in pool which held for 3 days. Last night I put 6 more gls in & haven't taken a reading yet. We did get a sample tested before dumping in the last 6 gls tho. FC .2, TC .2, CC 0,PH 8 Total Alk Inpute 120 (ppm the rest of these) Total ALk Adjusted 101, Calcium hardness 231, cyanuri acide 58, cooper, iron, manganese, nitrates, total dissolved solid all zero. phosphates ppb 0, sat index .6 endure (?) 0. Haven't been putting the 3" chor tablets either through this process. Am I on the right tract w/what I am doing or not? I think they gave my husb. some shock to put in , which I told him to hold off on & they also gave him some ph decreaser which I'm not sure if he put in yet. The water looks clear & beautiful.
