hello fellow pool enthusiasts!

I read through a some posts a few years to bring up my knowledge of pool chemistry. This is one of the few places where you can get real pool information.

Right now I want to upgrade to a variable speed pump. I have a Sta Rite 2HP which has lasted for many years, so I want similar quality and want to benefit from variable speed economy and I believe better filtration (I'll find out soon).

Enjoy the pool season (a short season fro Canadians)

If you're going to do it yourself, this is probably what you want:

Hayward SP3400VSP EcoStar VS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004TS04WI/scouscho-20/)
and this:
Intermatic PS3000 Pool Surge Protector (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00I506Z3S/scouscho-20/)

But, you'll need to check: in the US, Pentair has cut their warranty on do-it-yourself installations back to almost nothing. That might not be true in Canada. Or course, if you hire it done by a pool guy, he'll buy it (I assume) and the warranty problem won't be an issue.

Regardless, get a surge protector. The VS pumps are NOT as reliable as the pump you are replacing, and sensitive & very expensive electronics are the reason.

Also, if you can put some sort of cover over the pump so it doesn't get rained on, that might be a good idea. I've seen reports of water infiltrating the electronics.

But, do NOT compromise pump ventilation! Shade? Good! Rain cover? Good! Reduced airflow? Very, very bad!
