We are new to this, ( our pool is a year old) and are having troubles with our SWG already. We have cleaned it as recommended and have ran it a full 24 hours to try to get our chlorine level up. We've treated the pool with the "start up" kit to open it this Spring, therefore adding almost 8lbs of shock already. At what point do we assume the SWG is defective and call Pentair?

I'd don't know whether it is defective or not but if it were mine, I'd go ahead and call Pentair anyways. Nobody will know their product better than someone who works for the company. Hope you get a solution.

When to call? Assuming that all the indications are normal, after you have
1. Tested and adjusted your water to the proper limits. You need a K2006 and accurate salt strips.

2. Made sure your temperature is above 70 degrees.

I should add -- if you have ammonia in your pool, as a result of biodegradation of stabilizer over the winter, it may be working fine even though you can't see any effects.
Testkits!

Thank you, PoolDoc and Watermom. Still nothing. We've had the water tested at our local pool store and the free chlorine is .26, total chlorine .26 and combined chlorine= 0. We've got slimy floor and walls. The salt is 3400 ppm, right where it should be for the unit to be producing chlorine. Now... this is when I assume the SWG is defective.

One more recommendation, then.
+ Use plain 8% store brand bleach to bring your chlorine up to normal levels, and to maintain them for several days. THEN, see if the SWCG can keep up.
