We will be leaving for a week and have no one to keep up the chlorine in our pool. I use the 12.5% liquid chlorine. I want to avoid returning home to a pool full of algae. I have a few ideas of what to do but I need advice or experience from others. I really hate adding more CYA via the trichlor pucks but I know I have no choice.

1) I will be adding borates to 50 ppm.
2) I will switch over to trichlor pucks in a feeder for the duration.
3) I will brush the pool sides and bottom prior to leaving.
3) I will add liquid chlorine to shock level prior to leaving.

My questions are:

Should I add a polyquat 60% algaecide? If so, when/how do I add it?

Should I put our clear solar cover on or keep it off? Air temps are running in the high 80's to 90's and pool water is 85 degrees.

Your plan makes sense. You should add the polyquat a couple days before you leave as it will create a chlorine demand. Bring the pool back to shock level, then put a few tabs in the floater and hope for the best.
