I have a Lomart 18'x33' and roughly 4' deep. The pool is probably ancient, but has worked very well. I need a new sand filter and need to know the proper size and pump size. I was looking at a 22" Hayward with a 2HP pump....

Hayward is currently a better choice then Pentair, because Pentair has decided to slash the warranty period on pool equipment not installed by a contractor. A 22" sand filter would be ideal . . . but you are only looking for a 40 GPM flow rate. Higher flow than that will cause filtration to deteriorate, and will wash sand out, during backwash.

That translates to a 1 HP pump OR LESS! I'm working on a selection chart for you, and should have a preliminary form of it ready this afternoon.

So grateful for your response!! Unfortunately I bought a Hayward, 21" with a 1 1/2 hp pump... Should I return it for a 1 horse?? The pool is so green. Never had it like this!! But without circulation I would not expect anything else... Buying chlorine (unscented bleach) in a few...

A 1 HP pump would be better.

This one would be best.:
Hayward SP15922S Power-Flo Matrix Above-Ground Pump 2-Speed
