This is our 8th summer with our 40,000 gal cement pool. I'd like to try to use just bleach this summer instead of buying the expensive Haward Chlorinator. So my question is can I just leave last years Chlorinator tube in there and just not replace it and start using household bleach? We just painted the pool and filled it up so we are starting with fresh clean water.

1. Bleach has many benefits, but unless you can buy bulk industrial bleach (2 - 5 gallons of 12.5+% bleach), it isn't likely to be cheaper than trichlor. Sams Club sells 40lbs of trichlor (90% available chlorine) for about $110.
2. Since you are starting up with no stabilizer in the water, trichlor (or dichlor) would almost certainly be cheaper to strart, since you'd be adding BOTH chlorine and stabilizer with either one of those.
3. The Hayward inline chlorinator is an undesirable product on many levels.
