We are new to this method. We have an above ground pool, 27 foot round, 17,500 gallons, how do we get started?

#1) The most important thing is to get a good test kit. We recommend the Taylor K-2006 (or K-2006C - better value), you can't buy it in a store (that we've seen). If you log out then navigate to Forum->Testing and Adjusting Pool Water Chemistry->How to Get the Right Testkits for your Pool you'll find links. If you buy through the link, the pool forum will get some coin to keep the lights on.
#2) Read, read all you on the pool forum and at poolsolutions.com. Get familiar with the best guess chart.
Any questions, let us know.

Best Guess chart => http://pool9.net/cl-cya
Kit info => http://pool9.net/testkits
Volume calcs: 27 round w/ 48" walls => 42" water depth
13.5 x 13.5 x 3.14 (pi) x 3.5 ft x 7.46 gal/cft = 14,950 gallons.
