I have an round 54" AG 27'. Last year I started reading the pool forums and bought the Taylor-2006 kit. Which I found out that my CYA was high around 120ppm. Since this wasn't discovered until the end of the season I just used liquid chloride and ran it high. When I closed the pool I drained to bottom of the skimmer/return jet.

Reading that the only way to reduce the CYA is refilling, will the amount filled to reopen this year be sufficient enough to lower the CYA? Can I test CYA prior to refilling on uncirculted water?

You should absolutely test your CYA level, before attempting to lower it: you may find you have NO CYA left!

While the only way to lower CYA in-season is to drain and replace, it commonly biodegrades over the winter. Occasionally, this causes real problems when the end product formed is ammonia, rather than nitrogen gas.
