Starting to explore to find the do's and don'ts as we have never had a pool, just community pools.

Is your pool installed yet? What is the volume of the pool? What is the source of your fill water? If you will fill from a well, don't do it yet.

First thing you need to do is order a good test kit. The one we recommend is the Taylor K-2006 or 2006C which you can get through the test kit link in my signature. You should also pick up a cheap OTO/Phenol Red kit (red and yellow drops) from Walmart or someplace. You will use both kits.

Do a lot of reading here on the forum and also on our sister website www.poolsolutions.com.

Come back with more questions and also some testing numbers when you get them and someone here will help you go from there.

Thanks, the pool is supposed to be put in May ninth. Not sure of the volume but it is a 16x32 doughboy with a deep end. We are excited but also nervous since this is uncharted territory for us. I will start looking up the test kits!

Oh and they are filling from a fire hydrant.

Look at this Intex start-up recipe: http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/showthread.php/17055

You can follow that recipe, initially. You'll need to switch to standard pool operation by fall, and may do so immediately. But if you're nervous, that recipe will work fine for you during the first couple of months after the pool is filled. Hopefully, using that streamlined method will keep the 'new pool learning curve' from overwhelming you!

Good luck!
