Here is a pic from last year, I need to get some from this year though, especially a night one with the lights going. Plus, I have a lot more plants now. I would love to see other peoples above grounds, they are awkward to incorporate inot a yard.

Well that is either a Fanta Sea (they are awesome ONground pools, CarlD has one) or an IG, in which case its in the wrong thread and should be moved...

Anywho, here is my try at posting inline...

Ours is just operational for less than a week now, but we did actually get our first test drive family swim yesterday and I have to say - I LOVE our new pool. There is still lots of landscaping, etc to do but now its "Our Pool"....instead of just "The BIG job"

Pic 1 - Pool toys, snorkeling equipment and swimming begins! Panel rack and poolside shower shown - both our DIY projects.

Our pool is a 12 x 24 ft Kayak pool that we sunk a few feet into the ground (so it would line up with the existing deck on the side of the house). We bought it second hand for a steal, put a little $$ into getting some new parts (liner, filter, ladder) and have been loving it for about 4 years now.;)

Here are a few pics from outside the pool area.

What is that beautiful blue material surrounding your pool deckside? Blue carpeting? Blue tile? ???? What is underneath it? Wood 2x4's? Aluminum decking?
Just dying to know- the first pic makes it look very inground!
Hey, I just noticed- The water is moving in your pool-you must have the pump running :p !!!

Hey I like the gator. Where did you get that floater? How much was it....

CarlD

This is an older picture of my pool, and, yes, it IS A/G. But it looks the same...
http://home.earthlink.net/~dashmanc/pool/offdeck.jpg

This is looking at the back of the house--it's attached to our deck:

http://home.earthlink.net/~dashmanc/pool/wholepool.jpg

and this is the gate look from the back of the house.

http://home.earthlink.net/~dashmanc/pool/gate1.jpg

I did all the design work on all the woodwork on the deck and rails, designed and laid out the foundation and acted as my own GC.

The decking around the pool is all hollow panels and water gets pumped through them. So it's a solar heated pool, and the circulating water keeps the deck from burning your feet. Credit for that goes to FantaSea, who built the basic pool and solar decking. It's a custom size: 16'x40' with a 5'6" deep section. They usually do 20'x40' and 16'x32', or 12'x40' for lapping.

Since it's all cedar, every picket had to be milled by me, the gate is my own design, mortised and tenoned because I couldn't STAND the idea of a diagonal on the gate. Even the sill plate under the gate is custom-made by me. It's GREAT at keeping your toes from getting bashed. In 4 years, nobody's have been bashed by it! It's all to BOCA and town codes and passed inspections with no problem.

It is absolutely beautiful! It must be wonderful to sit there and think that you did it yourself! Best of luck, and happy swimming.

CarlD
06-25-2006, 10:33 PM
Thanks! We really love it! It's not as fancy as some of our neighbors' I/Gs, but it really has a different look and complements the house. Plus it's long enough to be a real lap pool--my personal criterion of ANY pool.

Next job, though is to push out the pool's own deck. I can only go one direction--to the right of the gate in the gate picture, or the end fence you see in the in-the-pool pic. I want to be able to sit IN the enclosure without having to go thru the gate. It's a smaller job, but I'm still planning it in my head before I start in on formal plans--and we have to start cutting more pickets!!!! I think I have most of it licked.

Carl, your pool is georgeous!

We also liked the idea of sitting in the pool area so we attached one (long) side of the pool to the existing deck. Hubby did a pretty good job at deciding where to dig for the pool. (We'd bought it second hand and installed it ourselves). ALOT if work, but worth the $$ it saved us.

I like the idea of the solar heating through the pool decking. Ours is made of tongue and groove aluminum panels that get hot, hot, hot when you're walking on them with dry bare feet. (I don't notice the heat when I'm wet). Would be nice to channel that heat into the pool!

I'll start by showing mine. Seeing as we all keep each other's pools "in check" I thought "Gosh, I'd love to see everyone's pool pictures. I'm suprised we don't have a room for that....I know, I'll start with mine!". So, here is the "donut" pool you all are helping me with.

This is Carisa. She is 9 months old and we start our official swimming lessons on the 3rd of July. This is the "come home and practice" pool.

Thank you all, for helping me maintain this pool!

Here are a few pics of my 30' AG pool. We dug it into a small slope, so the lowest side towards the house is only 20 inches off the ground. These pics are more of the deck...I'll try to get more of the pool. I hope this works!

I designed and built the house myself, and designed and built the deck, installed the pool, etc, myself. Since these pics, I added white vinyl lattice under all the decking.

Folks,
This thread is for showing off our A/G pools--and admiring others' pools. There was an ongoing discussion on fencing and codes that was completely off-topic and had reached 7 posts already. I have moved those posts to a new thread in the Above Ground Pool forum so you can enjoy continuing it there.

That way we can continue to keep this thread as what it is intended as: Our Above Ground Pool GALLERY.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

Carl

This is my pool in progress, I want to add a deck, and of course more plants. I also have the DE filter which will go in along with my sand filter, probably next year. I will be foregoing the use of the Nature2 next year also, I am interested in whether or not it is really needed, I tend to think it isn't.

All of the work has been done by me, from the setup of the pool, to the brick sidewalk, to the landscaping. I will get some night shots here soon with the sidewalk lit up and the pool light on, it looks cool.

I have learned so much from pool forum. They are beginning our install in just two days and I plan to put the progress up. I am so envious w/ the decking you all have and hope to knock that out this fall. I have the plans ready, it's time to enjoy the water and take advantage of the short time I have left. So, soon...........I'll share the slow progress.:)

Sevver.......do you have to walk to this switch as shown to turn on your light @ time or do you have it hard wired to another switch somewhere?

sevver
07-17-2006, 09:35 PM
Second picture down has the switch hanging on the pole I put in. You have to walk back there to turn it on. I could hard wire it and throw another switch by the backdoor I suppose, but I don't think I will, at least not yet. I always seem to need to go back there anyhow, either to turn up or down the heater or turn on or off the pump. I will have some night shots a bit later.

Are you happy with the decking under the edge of the pool like that? I want to do a deck and am trying to figure out how to do it, I am thinking probably like that, but I use a solar cover in the winter and don't think it will work well with that. Looks nice though, well done.

If it does great.......if not,, I'll keep tryin. To put a nail on my started thread "ester williams or doughboy" this is what we went with. This is the 30' EW w/ 52" walls. I liked the styling and the fact that the walls are aluminum. We still have alot of work to do to make it our "paradise away from the carribean" but it'll be fun.

We plan to extend the deck from where I am standing to take this picture and broaden it out on the right side and to the left near the bottom of the picture.
Until then, I'll hold of on the photos.

TracyB - Be aware that all those trees above/around your pool will give you a ton of extra work. After every rain storm we get (which is like every day @ 5pm) I have leaves, sticks, prickley balls & pine needles in my pool. I have some big trees around the pool, which are pretty - but they block a lot of sun and cause tons of extra work. I'd cut them down myself if they weren't so huge and kinda leaning towrads the house!

But your pool looks great to me. I'm curious to see how your decking turns out.
Yeah, I see your point about those darn trees. I have a landscaper friend who will do what ever I need to. I may eventually cut back about 20-30 feet but for now it'll have to do. I am most interested in the decking first since we only have about 2 months of swimming ..... then next fall I will tackle those trees while the pool is covered and the poison ivy is dormant. I'm allergic. I won't be posting more photos until then most likely, but right now it's a pain using a 6 foot ladder to get in and down the wedding cake steps. I'll keep you guys up and up on the progress as soon as it happens. Thanks
Oh and FYI.......those are north side trees so I get full sun from about 11:30 TO 4:30 5ISH then only maybe 1/4 shade till west ward sunset...maye that'll help me

ok guys. here is the deck in which we will be coming off of. the pool photo is in another post so I won't post it again. We wil be removing the steps and coming straight towards the bottom of the screen to your left of the red line(the pool now). We are also planing to go to your right off the deck about where that chiminea is sitting to about where the tree w/ the hostas is. (that is to give you and idea the distance right not the depth. the bigges part of the decking will be on the left hand side of the red. It'll be a few weeks till we start. I too have a Mac.....I'll never go back to windoze.......:D

Anyway, back to topic......These pool pics are great! They do give everyone great ideas.....

Carl D's post got me thinking......I love my 30' round pool, but my next house may have a oval or rectangle one, better for swimming laps, etc. I had to put the fencing around the top of my pool, but it is a pain to put the solar cover on and off.

Lesson learned is to think carefully about pool placement, getting in and out, deck size, solar cover stuff, etc.

Poolbuoy - tried to pm you but your mailbox was full. Did you get my private email?

Anyway, sweeeeeet solar panel set up. Question, how do the panels connect? I have some that look similar. They are tiny hoses that connect at the ends to barbs similar to drip irrigation formed on a pipe and they are beginning to leak something terrible.

I just got back from Pittsfield, MA. I almost put a post out to see if anyone lived in the area for a visit. Shoulda.

Thanks.

Thanks Faithfulfrank! The deck WAS alot of work for ALL of my friends: ha ha: I called them all up and said: Beer and Steak.... Two of them came over on Thursday, set the post and 12 guys were here on Saturday and finished the whole thing. My neighbors came over on the Sunday after and were cracking up: said it was like an Old Fashioned Amish Barn Raising Party, never saw a Deck go up so fast. The rest of the wives and I just sat on the existing Deck (red part) and watched, sun bathed and got the beer when 1 on them said they were thirsty and cooked when they said they were hungry. It was pretty comical, but having good friends is always awesome! The only part of the deck that I worked on was the decorations: tiki torches and such: :p

Just a word of caution about the tiki torches. I had one explode this past June and burnt my deck. It was minor and no one gut hurt but I have moved mine to the yard.
Very nice set up.

Sharklinejk, Pool looks great!....But, What's up with the weed control on the pond? Why so much? Props must be getting clooged all the time, not to mention spreading weeds from area to area.

Anybody else find that picture of a child diving head first into a 4 foot deep pool distressing ?? :(

Safety is always the prime concern with a pool !!!

It sure caught my eye. sharklinejk, you sure have a nice looking place and all, but I know you'd give it all up if one of your loved ones were hurt. And being hurt diving into an AG pool never ends well.

On a less serious note, you sure have a nice looking place. I'd love to have a deck like that around our pool. What body of water is that behind your pool? You must really enjoy sitting on the deck and enjoying the view. Nice.

Ok, have to ask, what is the difference between diving into a 4' AGP and a 3 1/2' IGP? We dove in the shallow end all the time for swim team.
Perhaps this child is used to diving into a shallow pool (although she does not appear to be doing a shallow dive...)
Please don't slam me, yes I know safety is important, and accidents do happen.

ETA: GORGEOUS pool and yard and waterway, sharklinejk!! What a view!

The difference is mostly the type of pool, A shallow pool used for competitive swimming is very long, the energy from the dive is used up well before any wall is encountered. It isn't just the hitting the bottom that can cause injury.

And it CAN happen!!

I have a friend who suffered a spinal injury from diving and hitting the wall in his AG as a teenager. He has been in a wheelchair since then, over 30 years.

Thank you all for the comments on the pool and the deck and the yard and all that: To answer some questions: Body of water: Its actually Lake Erie, just and inlet off of it called shantee creek. The weeds are stupid Lilly Pads and they only started growing about 3 years ago, at which time some moron told everyone that they were an endagered species so people were afraid to treat them to get rid of them (as you can see by the front of my property I didnt have that problem) But now everyone is getting on the bandwagon and has realized that they are NOT endagered and they can kill them all!

Daughter diving in: one of you had it correct: she is on a swim team and has been for years, I know it makes me nervous but you'de be amazed at how she actually just skims the surface when she is diving. The picture did not do her justice, and usually she dives more from the end and on the angled part of the deck. She swims on two different teams so she swims 10 months out of the year competitively (yes I drive alot) But just trust me the dive was not deep at all and she has never done a deep dive. She only wanted to do that one from the side cuz she knew I was taking a pic: HAM that she is.....

Thanks, I will make sure to keep an eye on them, I never have them lit unless I or my husband are out there. Now will pay even more attention. Thanks.
