View Full Version : How much muriatic acid to add?

Hi All,
I have a 25,000 gunite pool.

I've been doing the bleach thing for a while, and it has worked much better than the loads of powder I had been dumping in...but

I'm going through tons of it.
At least 1 bottle (the big bottle from WalMart 1.2 gallons I think) EVERY day, and sometimes 2 bottles just to keep any algae from starting. Even with that much it is nearly gone in 24 hours.

My pH is also high. Straight 8.0 which is the top of my tester's scale, so it could be even higher than that.

I presume the high pH is hurting the ability of my chlorine to do its thing...

So I need to drop the pH with muriatic acid, right?

How much do I put in at a time? That stuff is nasty. I don't want to make the pool unswimmable by putting in too much. I put in about a quart and it had no effect on pH.

So how much acid do I add at a time?

Thanks in advance.

What is your TA? if it is high it will make your pool resistant to pH changes. Keep putting in the acid and testing. It will start to move once it has overcome the buffer effect of your TA.
Post a full set of test results and we can get a better handle on what is happening in your pool. If you chlorine is not holding I wonder what your CYA level is.

My pool is abotu 25k gallons and I needed to lower my PH in order to airate my water to bring my TA down. My PH was 7.8 and my TA was 160. I dumped a gallon of Muriatic acid in the pool last night by carefully pouring it so the return would spread it into the pool. This dropped my PH to 7.2 when I just measured it this morning. Of course after pouring in the entire gallon last night I read somethign where ben suggests NOT dropping it all at once...so in the future i will be adding it in 1qt doeses. Figuring each qt will provide about .15 drop in PH.
