I am not very knowledgable about the Hamilton index. Is it any better or worse than the Langalier Index?

As I have an ongoing iron fight with red dust (ferric oxide, aka rust) being blown into my pool I try to keep the ph at or around 7.4 as recommended by persons on this forum. This seems to really help. I keep my alkalinity at 100. Unfortunately this requires daily addition of muriatic acid and 2 to 3 times a week, a 15 ppm upward adjustment of the alkalinity with baking soda.

I was looking at this index and thinking of allowing my ph to rise to 7.8; at that level I hardly ever have to add chemicals. The question is am I inviting a return of the iron stains.

Any help would be appreciated.

Higher pH will increase the possibilty of metal staining. Hamilton index is probably as useful as the Langilier index which ,IMHO, is not very useful at all!

Thank you for the reply.

There goes another time saving and money saving idea out of the window.

Thank goodness for credit cards.
