I like to thank the mods on this forum, I absolutely love it here. I have probably spent 4-5 hours reading through all the useful stickies and guides, I learned so much that I don't consider myself a newbie pool owner anymore. I would like to get registered and also confirm something.

I had a mustard algae bloom due to my improper care with the chlorine level. I have kept my pool at shock level using the best guess chart for the past 4 days and my pool is no longer green :) but it is cloudy which I guess is all the dead algae plus maybe a few live ones. I'm vacuuming (not to waste, I'm using a dolphin robot) and brushing the sides and the bottom every day after adjusting the chlorine level.

Judging from my results so far I think I'm on the right track. So what is next?
I believe I should keep shocking and vacuuming the pool until it gets clear. Is that correct? The weekend is supposed to be nice and sunny so I hope it gets cleared up by then. Is there anything I can do to speed things up a bit? I saw in one of the posts that Ben recommended a floc of specific brand.

I was also wondering, my pump's been running 24/7. Should I maybe turn it off one of these nights to let the dead algae settle to the bottom so I can sweep it the next day?

Thank you very much,

PS. I don't have my Taylor kit yet(which I ordered through here) so I cannot provide accurate numbers, but I can provide the numbers with my crappy test kit if needed.

+ Letting the algae settle can be a good idea . . . but only if you have a way to vacuum it. Sweeping will just stir it back up.

+ The Intex OEM cartridges are low quality. If you replace them with higher quality Filbur or Unicel cartridges, you will get (a) better filtration and (b) much longer cartridge life.

+ The OEM cartridges in Intex / Summer Escapes / etc. filters are not high quality. The Intex manuals recommend replacing them completely every 2 weeks. A BETTER option is to replace them permanently with 2 - 3 Unicel cartridges, and rotating them through a cleaning solution. Properly maintained, the Unicel cartridges will last all season AND will filter better. So even though they cost more per cartridge, they cost less per season! But, purchasing them is tricky. Amazon does not consistently stock them, and some of the 3rd party sellers are charging high prices and/or high shipping. So, check the Amazon link, but watch out for the prices and shipping costs.

It would be nice if you could just buy them elsewhere, but many of the online pool stores are listing Pleatco or other Asian made low quality filters, as "Unicel C-4607 type" or "fits Unicel C-4607". So shop carefully!

Hi Doc,

Was this meant for me or somebody else? I have a sand filter. Can you please verify my account?

Thank you.
