I have been taking care of my family's pools since I was a teenager. I have an 12x24 semi-inground on my property with a sand filter; coupled with a 1hp variable speed motor. I can always get the pool crystal clear but what bugs me as I become more obsessive with the concept of "crystal clear" is that when I am under the water with goggles there are all these bits and pieces of stuff in the water. At night, with the underwater lamp on, they are very noticeable. I suspect that these contaminants are too small for the sand filter to capture them. I was thinking about switching to a DE filter but do not want to go in that direction without some confirmation that it will make a difference.

Thanks in advance all.

You may try a little DE in your sand filter to see if that will help you filter out those smaller particles. It does seem to help. Several of us do it. Go to the Pool Equipment and Operations section of the forum. The fourth thread from the top explains how to do it.
