I am getting ready to open our pool. I bought a heater late last year and have yet to use it. My question is how do I keep the heater from over heating when the pump shuts off or should I run the pump 24h. I have the pump setup on a timer. My pool is a 24' round.

You have 2 options:

1. Have a timer circuit wired that feeds BOTH the pump and heater, so that when the pump is turned off, so is the heater.
2. Operate the pump 24/7 during periods when you are using the heater.

My heater has a head pressure switch, and will automatically shut off when the water flow stops. Depending on which heater you've got, it might have the same. Check the manuals for the model you are looking at.

If your heater has one, you'll have to follow the manual to adjust it for the specific head pressure your plumbing setup has. It's easier than it sounds. for mine, it works like this:

Clean the filter
Turn the pump and heater on
turn the switch adjustment down until the heater detects low pressure and shuts off
turn it up 1/4 turn from there
test to see if the heater automatically shuts off when the pump is stopped
